Questions about SteadyFile

Straight answers about what SteadyFile does, what it costs, who can see your file, and what it will not do.

What is SteadyFile?

SteadyFile is a private, dated record you keep as things happen: at work, in rental housing, in parenting arrangements, or around an agreement with a business or another person. You write short dated entries, list the records that show them and the people involved by role. If you ever need to show someone, SteadyFile turns it into one clean, chronological packet a manager, HR, a union rep, a mediator, a legal clinic, a lawyer or another reviewer can read in a few minutes.

Why keep a record before anything goes wrong?

Notes written at the time are usually clearer and more complete than notes rebuilt months later. A running record also helps on ordinary days: a performance review, a raise conversation, a lease renewal or a move-out inspection. When you are signed in, SteadyFile records on its server when each entry was written and keeps every edit, so a record kept over time shows when each note was made. Most people never need to export; the record is there if they do.

Who is SteadyFile for?

People in Canada and the United States who want their own clear, dated record of their work, their rental housing, a parenting arrangement, or a business agreement or money owed. Employment is the most common use. You pick a file type (work, rental housing, family or something else) and the prompts, lists and packet labels match it.

Does SteadyFile give legal advice?

No. SteadyFile provides documentation tools and general legal information. It does not provide legal advice, does not create a lawyer-client relationship, and will not tell you whether you have a case, what it is worth or what to do next. It helps you organize facts so the people who can advise you can do it faster.

Can my employer, landlord or the other parent see my file?

No. SteadyFile never gives anyone else access to your file. Without an account, your file is saved only in the browser on your device, so anyone who can open that browser can see it. If you choose to sign in, your file syncs to your account so you can use it on another device; it is still visible only to you.

Do I need an account?

No. You can start a file, add entries, records and people, and preview the packet without an account or a card. An account is optional and adds sync across devices and a server-recorded history of when each entry was created and changed.

How much does SteadyFile cost?

Keeping a file and previewing the packet is free. Exporting the polished packet is a one-time payment: the Packet Pass is $49 and includes 12 months of exports, and the Complete Packet, which adds your attached files as numbered exhibits, a cover summary and a timeline view, is $149. Prices are in CAD in Canada and USD in the US. There is no subscription.

What is in the packet?

A chronological record of your entries, an index of your records with where each original lives, the people involved by role, open questions for a reviewer, and the SteadyFile disclaimer. The Complete Packet adds a one-page cover summary, a timeline with one row per entry, numbered entries, a contents page and your attached files as exhibits.

Does SteadyFile upload my documents or photos?

No. Attached files stay on your device and are added to the PDF on your device. To build the PDF, the packet text is sent to SteadyFile's server and is not stored. You keep your originals.

Are my entries timestamped?

Every entry carries the date of the event you enter. When you are signed in, SteadyFile also records when each entry was created and keeps earlier versions when you edit, so a later change does not silently overwrite the original note. The Complete Packet can include that edit history.

Is a SteadyFile packet evidence?

SteadyFile does not decide that. A packet is an organized copy of what you recorded and an index of records you hold. Whether and how any record is used is a question for a qualified lawyer or the body reviewing your matter.

Can I use SteadyFile for a landlord or tenant issue?

Yes. Choose the rental housing file type. It has its own record categories and prompts (repairs, notices, deposits, communication with the landlord or property manager), and the packet reads Landlord and Tenancy instead of Employer.

Can I use SteadyFile for co-parenting or a custody arrangement?

Yes. Choose the family file type. It has its own categories and prompts (exchanges, schedule changes, expenses, school and health appointments, mediation), the packet reads Other parent and Children, and children are listed by initials or age. SteadyFile does not give advice about custody, parenting time or support and does not tell you what to file. For that, speak with a family lawyer or a family law information centre.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. SteadyFile runs in the browser on phones, tablets and computers. There is nothing to install.

Does SteadyFile cover my province or state?

SteadyFile works anywhere in Canada and the United States. Your province, territory or state is a label on the file. SteadyFile does not give jurisdiction-specific legal information; the resources page points to official public bodies.

How do I delete my file?

Use Clear this file in the workspace to remove everything saved in that browser. If you have an account, you can delete the account and its synced data from the account page.
